Asphalt roofing singles are the most popular home roofing material in t he United States, thanks to their low cost, wide availability, durability, and easy installation and maintenance. They are produced in different grades, with higher grades being sturdier and more expensive than lower ones.

Now available in a wide range of colors, and even in organic materials, asphalt roofing shingles are usually warranted for decades and can be well-maintained with two-year inspections in which any loose or damaged shingles are replaced. The wide availability of asphalt roofing shingles means that the homeowner will have no difficulty in replacing them when necessary.

Asphalt Roofing Shingles: The Most Popular Roofing

When you think “roof”, you probably think of a roof made of asphalt roofing shingles. If you don’t have asphalt shingle roofing, chances are the guys next door does. It is just about the most popular roofing material in America.

Formula For Success

Asphalt roofing shingles are so popular because they are easy to get a hold of, cheap, lightweight and do not require a degree in rocket science to install. Any competent roofer will know how to install and maintain a roof made of asphalt roofing shingles. Contrast this to slate roofing, which requires different skills in laying down, handling and cutting altogether.

Just like any other kind of roofing materials, there are different grades of asphalt roofing shingles. The higher the grade, the more expensive they will be. But it might be cheaper to shell out now rather than later. How tough are asphalt roofing shingles? Class IV is considered tough enough to withstand hail. And you are not stuck with just gray anymore. Asphalt roofing shingles now come in a variety of colors.

Asphalt roofing shingles are made of fiberglass and an organic composite material of felt, paper and asphalt. The organic ones are heavier, less likely to blow off but are more expensive. If you are seeking to live in your home and not sell it in a few years, consider the organic alternative.

Warranties

Many asphalt roofing shingles come with warranties lasting decades. You can have your contractor or roofer order any special brand name shingles, such as Elk or Eagle. Although asphalt roofing shingles are tough, they do need your help and at least a biannual checkup in order to do their job.

You need an annual or at least a biannual roof inspection to be sure there isn’t any small problems that can turn into big headaches. Tiles can be damaged or get loose. Because of their wide availability, getting replacements is easy for your roofer.

You also need to be sure your attic or upper crawlspace has adequate ventilation. The temperature outside of your home will often be a lot different than inside of your home. The roof is then hot on one side and cold on the other. This can stress asphalt roofing shingles, causing them to give up the ghost. But with a proper buffer zone between the roof and your home, the stress of the differing temperatures is lessened. If your attic or crawlspace has pools of water, mold, smells damp – you need to get it fixed.

The 21st century began with a global building boom which saw an enormous variety of roofing materials become widely available, and homeowners now can use their imaginations to choose roofing materials guaranteed to add an air of distinction to their homes.

While familiar asphalt roofing shingles remain the most popular form of roofing in the Untied States, there are now synthetic roofing materials like fiberglass an PVC along with traditional ones like wooden shakes an shingles, aluminum, tin, copper, and steel roofing, and the oldest of all, slate and tile roofing. The choice of roofing material will be limited only by a homeowner’s budget and location.

The Various Types of Roofing

There are many different factors that individuals may wish to consider when they are selecting roofing for their current house or for a new house that they may be building. Each type of roofing offers advantages and drawbacks and the main types of roofing are composition shingle, corrugated sheet, wood, built-up roofing, metal, and tile.

Composition Shingles and Corrugated Sheets

Composition shingles are seen in the majority of homes in the US today. Generally, composition shingles are known as asphalt shingles. These are basically applied to your roof using an adhesive along with nails. This type of roofing can be come in many different styles and quality levels; the quality levels are general numbered from one to three. The type of quality a consumer chooses will likely to be dependent on how much they want to spend.

Corrugated sheet roofing can be made of a few different types of materials, fiberglass, PVC, or fiber. This type of roofing is generally installed over an existing roof. It is preferred by many consumers because it is perhaps the easiest type of roof to install by a do-it-yourselfer.

Wood and Built-Up Roofing

Wood roofing can be made of shingles or shakes. This type of roof is preferred by some consumers, because it gives a natural look and feel to the home. Shingles have a smooth finish and shakes are rough in texture and look even more natural. While thought to be a fire hazard by some, many homeowners prefer in these for aesthetic reasons.

Built-up roofs are not as commonly seen in regular homes, although they are frequently seen on commercial-type buildings. These roofs are generally seen on very flat structures or structures that have only a very slight slope. They are created by using layers of fiberglass treated with asphalt. Then, this layer will be treated with tar made from asphalt.

Metal and Tile Roofs

Although they were considered outdated at one point in time, metal roofs have become very popular over the last couple of decades. Metal roofs are popular because they are not very difficult to install, may require very little maintenance, and are nonflammable. Depending on the type of metal roof purchased they can actually last up to 50 years.

Title and slate roof roofing date back to a time when other types of modern roofing were not available. While they are very durable and will last for long time, they can be very expensive and very difficult to install. Also, they will not always work on every type of structure. Many structures would have to be reinforced for this type of roof to be safe and long lasting.

Deck roofing has long been a common feature of high end hotels and urban high rises, offering both guests and residents a private space to relax among lush roof gardens or in exclusive restaurants while they watch the rest of the world pass far beneath their feet. The term “deck roofing,” in these instances, simply refers to a large flat roof.

But deck roofing can also refer to a slightly sloped roof added to a residential deck so that it is protected from inclement weather, making it available for outdoor enjoyment over an extended period of the year. All deck roofing needs to be properly waterproofed.

What Is A Deck Roof?

If I was to say that I was building a roof deck, would you know what I was talking about? A deck roof, or a flat roof, is very similar to most normal interpretations of roofs, it just lacks the pitch. Think of it like an extra deck on your second story. While popular in rural areas, most roof decks are found in large commercial cities like New York, or on islands where a traditional pitched roof is too hot. There are roof decks on most apartment buildings, hotels, and even high class restaurants. Perhaps one of the most famous roof decks in the United States is Fenway Park’s Budweiser Right Field Roof Deck, which gives a beautiful view of the game, unlimited food and drinks, and a behind the scenes VIP tour of the park, for $20,000.

Don’t Rain On Me

Outdoor sun decks take a strong beating from the elements. Wind, rain, snow, sleet, hail, anything and everything falls on them, as well as on your roof. However, your roof is covered with thousands of shingles (or aluminum sheets) to keep the rain out. When you begin to combine the roof and the deck to create a nice platform to walk out on, the biggest thing you are ever going to have to worry about is leakage. Making the roof deck waterproof is the most important task.

The best solution to this problem is a slight slope to the floor. Nothing too drastic, but if it’s not leaning towards a drop off point, usually the edge of the house itself, then water will start to pile up and the rooms below could get ruined. At the edge of the roof, where the angled floor ends, it’s not a bad idea to place a gutter system of some sort, so the water will run off into a specified place.

Roof decks can be a nice addition to a residential home or a commercial business. If you own a hotel, a roof deck can be a place for your occupants to get out on top of the roof and see the sights safely from up above. Hundreds of bars, clubs, and restaurants have roof decks that allow their patrons to eat with the wind in their hair. If you are a residential home owner and you are thinking of spicing up the retail value of your house with some improvements, a roof deck is a nice way to do that and give yourself some extra space at the same time.

First invented in 1938, fiberglass has now found its way into thousands of common household products, including fiberglass roofing sheets. Fiberglass roofing sheets are available in corrugated, shingled, and tapered panels, and are lightweight, exceptionally strong, waterproof, and most important of all, very affordable.

Fiberglass roofing sheets can be either opaque or translucent, an come in a variety of colors. They are also available in hundreds of printed patterns. Translucent fiberglass roofing sheets allow enough natural light to enter a structure that they can actually lower its energy costs! Fiberglass roofing costs between 65% and 70% less than alternative roofing materials

The Advantages Of Fiberglass Roofing Sheets

Fiberglass is a material consisting of fine fibers of glass that is very sturdy and hardy. It is usually utilized to make a product that has mixed the fiberglass with some other components to create what is technically known as fiber reinforce polymer or glass reinforced plastic. This composite is commonly known as fiberglass. It is used in so many every day things.

One of the uses for fiberglass is for roofing material. Many people have opted to use this material for their rooftops because they are not as heavy as metal and ceramic shingles and they are also very good insulators.

Using Fiberglass Roofing Sheets

Fiberglass roofing sheets are commonly used for roofs. They offer home and building owners a sturdy and secure roof that can also be utilized as a lighting roof because some fiberglass are see through. Other fiberglass roofing sheets may have prints but the more common are almost opaque while others are almost see-through sheets. The see through roofing sheets can let a degree of sunlight or just ordinary light in to supply the room or are with light. Fiberglass roofing sheets can help conserve energy and electricity through this use.

Some manufactures of the fiberglass roofing sheets make their sheets according to specs of the buyers as long as they order by bulk. Other manufacturers also have many choices for their purchaser and they stock these items according to the demand. There are also many fiberglass roofing sheets with many different kinds of prints that can be used as decorative and camouflage roofing.

Fiberglass roofing sheets are often made very sturdy by the manufacturers that a person can stand on the flat sheet for a longtime without any fear of it cracking or giving way to the pressure and the weight of the individual. These sheets are also handy to have because they can be used to let light into shed or room at the same time they can protect from the elements. Fiberglass roofing sheets are also good insulators for rooftops. They act as insulators when they house has little or no insulation at all.

They can also be attractive roofing sheets when they are printed on and can complement a house or area with their color and prints. Fiberglass roofing sheets are also longer lasting than some roofing materials and this is one of the reasons why some home owners and builders have switched to fiberglass roofing sheets.

When I was young and foolish, I found myself adrift in Southwestern England, and paired up with a footloose recorder player named Mitch. Neither Mitch nor I had a roof over our heads, but we soon remedied the situation by finding a leaky tow person tent and using plastic roofing to cover the leaks.

We graduated from the tent to building a small “bender” covered with plastic roofing and surplus Army tents, and grew our own food with the help of a DIY greenhouse in which plants were sheltered with plastic roofing. Both the greenhouse and bender, thanks to their plastic roofing, were standing when I finally left England.

The Plastic Roofing In My English Misadventure

In 2000, I fell in love with a blue-eyed recorder player and thief named Mitch (not his real name) in Bath, England. He asked me to run away with him and I did. I was not right in the head at the time, but that’s another story. Now, I’d lived all of my life in Pennsylvania, in comfortable flats and houses, and so to suddenly become homeless in south West England was a bit of a shock. But I survived. One of the reasons I did was because of the many variations of plastic roofing I came across in the years I was homeless.

Plastic Roofing?

My first experience with plastic roofing while homeless was a plastic two person tent with a plastic tarpaulin covering it from the worst of the rain. The only real problem with living in a tent (besides no indoor plumbing) is that when it rains, the inside of the tent eventually becomes wet with condensation. You can’t touch the sides of the tent when it rains. So plastic roofing certainly has its drawbacks.

Also, plastic roofing needs to be checked every day for new holes or tears. These can often be patched up with duct tape, as long as the plastic roofing is both clean and dry. Otherwise, the tape can’t get a proper grip and peels immediately off.

Living in a tent became comfortable and convenient when the weather was warm. When it turned to October, though, both Mitch and I knew that we would never survive in just a tent. He could not get housing, so we had no choice but to build our own home in a corner of the woods on disputed land that no one could develop.

The Bender

Our home, which the English call a ‘bender’ looks like a short longhouse. It’s a framework made of green young tree trunks with all kinds of materials thrown about it for a roof, and a smoke hole for when you install a metal stove and makeshift smokestack. We tried a few materials, but an under layer of plastic roofing seemed to keep the bender dry (for the most part). Over the plastic roofing we threw old Army surplus tents, which had us blend in well with the surrounding woods.

The Greenhouse

Eventually, we tried our hands at growing our own food. For that, we needed a little greenhouse. We made that out of a couple of wooden arches and clear plastic roofing and a desk someone put in the trash. It got right tropical in there at times. The greenhouse was still standing when I left England. The bender lasted over a year longer than my relationship with Mitch. So plastic roofing can help in survival situations.

Your choice of patio roofing can either make your patio look like an integral part of your home, or make you patio look like a poorly conceived afterthought. So you should choose your patio roofing with care, and do it before you begin construction of your patio’s walls. You need to ensure that your finished patio walls will be strong enough to handle the weight of your patio roofing.

Both translucent fiberglass panels and different types of metal roofing are popular patio roofing materials. Some homeowners have even installed solar panels in their patio roofing, to help reduce their home energy bills.

Choose Patio Roofing To Fit Needs And Appearance

Maybe you’re thinking of installing a patio on an existing outdoor deck and walls and windows are not a concern. However, with many options available for patio roofing, choosing the right one can make or break the purpose of the room. While solid patio roofing materials may seem an obvious choice, there are some other things to consider.

If the patio is essentially an addition to the house, choosing patio roofing that matches the style and line of the house will keep it from looking like an afterthought. However, if the deck-turned-patio is going to function as a family room or playroom, consider patio roofing made of aluminum struts and metal sheeting. It is lighter and easier to handle than building roof trusses out of wood, covering it with weatherproof plywood, roofing felt and shingles. It may possibly be cheaper as well.

Another option for patio roofing are translucent fiberglass panels. They are installed similar to metal roofing panels, but allow light to filter in during the day. They cannot be seen through, but allows additional lighting. This can help reduce electric costs by using natural light during the daytime hours.

Consider Solar Panels For Local Power

Another option for new patio roofing may be solar panels. If the roof is facing the right direction and is exposed to sunlight, they can be used to provide energy for the patio and possibly others parts of the house. On average, installing solar panels as part of patio roofing, each panel can produce enough power to keep a light bulb lit for about 24 hours. The more panels you can install, the more power you can harness. Check with a solar energy company to determine if it is worth the investment for you.

Whether you choose a solid wood-and-shingle style patio roofing or metal, there should be roof vents installed. Even if the ceiling is open, they will help with air circulation throughout the year, helping prevent moisture buildup along the top of the roof in the summer and help circulate warmer air in the winter.

Metal is another option for patio roofing, but it will require a wood underlayment to which to screw the metal sheets. Whichever style patio roofing that is chosen the roof and walls must be sturdy enough to handle the weight of the new roof. Planning the roof materials before building the walls of the patio will be necessary to make sure they all come together properly.

While roll roofing material certainly makes for easier roof installation than shingles or tiles, installing roll roofing is still a difficult job for an individual to do properly. Before you can begin a roll roofing job, you have to purchase the right amounts of the right type of roll roofing, and wit for ah warm day on which to install it.

You also have to unroll the roofing material so that it will lie flat for twenty-four hours before you being to install it. This will keep it from trying to roll back up once it has been attached to your roof.

A How-To For Roll Roofing

Roll roofing is a big task, sometimes too big for most homeowners. However, if you feel you are up to this task, then perhaps this article will help you. First off, be sure that the day you decide to install your roof is warm, because on cold days the material will become hard and brittle. You should lay the roll roofing out flat for a full day before installing it. This lets it get used to the feeling of not being rolled up and it won’t pull up on the nails as much later.

Different Types

Before we get into the actual installation of the roof, let’s talk about the different types. A common form of roll roofing in rural areas is called Mineral-Surfaced Roll Roofing, and it is covered on one side with small rocks and granules. It is mostly used on small buildings like sheds, barns, and farm animal pens. Another type is Specialty-Eaves Flashings, and this type of roll roofing is not used often.

It is mostly used on eaves in geographic locations where icy buildups are frequent. The next type, Smooth-Surfaced, is pretty much self-explanatory. This type of is similar to the Mineral-Surfaced, except instead of small rocks it is covered with a smooth coat of ground talc. Smooth-Surfaced sheets are usually used to create an extra sealant wherever needed, usually on eaves. The last form is Saturated Felt, which is an underlying part between the material and the roof deck.

Some Like It Hot

Hot asphalt is not as easy as the cold installation method, but some people say it works better. The main problem is just that it’s hard to handle hot asphalt and roll roofing by yourself, and for most homeowners it is just simply not worth it. However, cold installation of roll roofing has gained popularity, and you can buy this spreadable adhesive at most construction stores. Most cold applications can be spread out by a large squeegee and smoothed to perfection, and then the roofing section is laid down over it.

Where Can I Buy Roll Roofing?

The easiest place to buy the exact amount of roll roofing you would need for any specific job is your local hardware store. If you don’t have a local hardware store, or you prefer to shop from home, Lowes.com and HomeDepot.com both have good deals on getting your roll roofing delivered right to your door. Remember to be safe when installing your roof, and be sure you are sure of what you are doing. Roll roofing is a difficult task, and it helps to have an experienced person there to help you.

Anyone either buying a new home or repairing the roof on and existing one will benefit from the expertise of roofing contractors. Roofing contractors can assess the condition of a roof and either certify it as sound for a specific length of time, or make recommendations concerning the roofing materials needed to repair it.

You should ask the roofing contractors you interview if they are licensed and bonded; what the amount of their liability insurance is; and if they have been approved by the makers of the roofing material they intend to install on your roofing project. Your municipal licensing agency should have lists of the licensed roofing contractors in your area.

How To Hire Roofing Contractors

If you are planning on purchasing a home or you are thinking about doing some home improvement projects then you should know that the roof is a very big issue for a lot of people. This is because nobody wants to move into a home that has a roof that is not going to be able to survive the next winter. However, changing a roof or making slight changes and fixing parts of your roof, is something that can really interfere with your day to day life. This is especially true if you do it in the winter time or during a rainy season. For this reason, you may wish to enlist the help of roofing contractors.

Learning About Roofing From Roofing Contractors

If you want to learn a little more about roofing work, costs and ideas then you should get into contact with some roofing contractors. These roofing contractors have done a lot of research when it comes to roofs and thus they can help you to understand the basic concepts of roofing. They can also explain the terms and names that are used in this field. Plus they can also give you a list of prices that you will need.

Over time people have devised a wide array of ways in which to deal with different materials that are used for building roofs. Each of these has its own strong and weak points when it comes to weather conditions and area restrictions. These are also things that roofing contractors have great knowledge of.

What Roofing Contractors Do

There are 3 main things that roofing contractors do. First of all you can rely upon roofing contractors to install new shingles for you. Roofing contractors are the experts that you can depend upon whenever you need to put a new roof on your home. Secondly, roofing contractors can also help you correct any problems that have to do with your home’s roof. As such, they are able to make things better and safer for you. Third, and finally, roofing contractors can install additional scaffolds and add-ons to keep other damage from occurring.

Conclusion

As with all other contractors you should try to find other people who have worked with the roofing contractors you are in contact with so that you can see the results or at least talk to them about their experiences. Of course, this should be something that you do before finalizing the details, which should be put down on paper and signed.

The range of products now being manufactured by roofing companies has grown to such an extent that many roofing companies have begun their own catalogs to help homeowners find their way through all the available roofing materials and supplies.

While roofing companies still produce traditional roofing like asphalt or wooden shingles; aluminum, steel, or copper roofing; translucent and lightweight fiberglass and PVC panels, and even old-fashioned slate and tile roofing, they are also introducing 21st century technology to their craft with solar roofing panels. Roofing companies have products to suit homeowners on any budget and project of any architectural style.

The Products of Many Roofing Companies

Roofing materials are so varied and numerous that many roofing companies have made catalogs and other listings for them. These catalogs list down and enumerate the dozens of roofing materials available from the roofing companies. Roofs are a necessity in our lives; it provides shelter and keeps us safe from the elements. It can also insulate us from the cold and the sun’s heat.

Roofing Companies Major Products

The more common roofing materials manufactured by most roofing companies are asphalt roof shingles. These are tiles which are manufactured en masse to provide the demand that home owners and other building contractors have for it. These types of material fall under the classification of composition shingles.

Some roofing companies also manufactures PVC or fiberglass sheets for roofs. These are usually translucent materials that are place in an overlapping pattern in our rooftops. They are hardy and durable materials that can withstand a lot of pressure and elements.

Roofing companies also manufacture wooden shingles or shakes to make attractive roofing. These look like authentic old fashioned roofing materials which are used during the old times. These days they are durable and often aesthetically pleasing to the eyes. The only downfall of these wooden tiles is that they need constant maintenance from leaks and water.

Some roofing companies also manufacture metal roofing materials for the convenience of the buyers. Metal roofing is low maintenance, fire resistant and deflects heat from the sun. Steel is durable and can often be overlooked for maintenance because they do not require a lot of attention. For low maintenance roofing materials, choose steel roofing.

Tiles and slates are also manufactured by bigger roofing companies. These roofing materials are the more expensive kinds and they have been used in many buildings for their durability and insulation. When these materials are used for the rooftops, you will need to reinforce your structure to accommodate the additional weight of the slate and tiles. Roofing companies also need to provide the stores that sell these materials with the proper installation guide for tiles and slates because these are rather difficult to install and put up. These are not you average do-it-yourself kind of roof materials.

These are just some of the few roofing materials available. There are more specialized roofing materials like solar panels and these provide home owners and buildings owners with the capacity to produce their own. Not all roofing companies manufacture these types of roofing materials since they are integrated into the materials itself and need additional work.

The roofing labor rates you are quoted by different roofing contractors may very well be the deciding factor in which one gets the job, and you need to know exactly what each contractor is quoting the roofing labor rates he is. High roofing labor rtes may mean that a contractor sees your roofing project as more extensive than you do, and low roofing labor rates may mean that the contractor intends to cut corners at the expense of doing quality work.

Get references from all your potential roofing contractors, and check with your local home improvement store to get a ballpark idea of normal roofing labor rates in your area.

Roofing Labor Rates And Information

One of the most important things that you have to think about when you are choosing a specific company for building your roof is the price. You want something that is affordable, something you can squeeze into your daily budget, while at the same time you do not want to sacrifice the quality of your roof just to pinch a few pennies. Over time roofing labor rates have changed, and what you paid fifteen years ago for your last roof may not be an accurate comparison for what you will be paying now. It is also vitally important that you know exactly what you are going to be buying, because no one wants to be charged for a full installation when all you needed was a patch job.

Why So Much?

Anything can affect the roofing labor rates on a job, from the pitch of a roof to how many dormer windows you have. Overhang angles, tie-ins, anything that will cause the company to take extra time is going to drive the roofing labor rate up. This is where it becomes vitally important on selecting a contractor. You should always work with a professional contractor, unless you know for a fact that the person you are employing definitely knows how to put up a roof. Say, if someone from the neighborhood tells you that he is a part-time roofer and that he can fix your roof for a cheaper rate than professional contractors, ask him who some of his references are and contact them. Ask about the quality of their roof and how it has stood up over time.

Checking references is an important step in any contractor selection process. Professional contractors may raise their roofing labor rates from job to job, so making sure that their work is worth the price is imperative. You may even want to ask to speak with anyone who was unhappy with their roof, so you can get a proper medium of references. Asking around at a local hardware store or lumber yard is a good way to get a feel for your local roofing labor rates.

No Base

You may be asking yourself, how do I know whether I am getting ripped off? If you don’t know what the base roofing labor rate is, how will you know if your contracting company is charging too much or not enough, although I’m sure the latter would not be a problem. Unfortunately, roofing labor rates change not only from one geographic location to another, but from one city to another, and even one job to another. The best way to find a fair estimate of your job would be to invite two or three different contracting companies out to look at your roof and then have them give you an estimate. Out of the estimates you receive, you can decide which of the companies you feel the most comfortable with.
