Concrete roofing tile should not be confused with the terra cotta half rounds so prevalent on roofs in tropical climates. Concrete roofing tile is composed of concrete, sand, and pigment, and its weight and durability make it ideal for high end homes one which it will last for at least fifty years.

A roof of concreter roofing tile is nearly impervious to water, ice, or snow damage, but should only be installed on a roof substructure strong enough to bear its extra weight. Installation of concreter roofing tile requires a high degree of expertise, and should be left to roofing crews with plenty of experience.

For Lasting Protection Concrete Roofing Tile Makes Sense

One of the most durable materials for roofs in areas with a severe climate is concrete roofing tile and with a vast array of styles and colors to choose from, they can maintain a home’s appearance for 50 years and beyond. Usually when people think about concrete roofing tile they imagine the half-round red clay tiles common in southern areas of the country. However, this tile will not last very long in parts of the country where winter weather can be harsh with several freeze-thaw cycles occurring each year.

A word of caution on the use of concrete roofing tile, is that they are typically heavier than even asphalt tile and before it is installed the roof’s substructure should be checked to insure it can hold the additional weight. While not as heavy as slate, the average 400-pounds per one hundred square feet for asphalt, will put extra stress on the roof support trusses.

Most concrete roofing tile consist of concrete, sand an color pigment, which allows it to match any color the homeowner wished to have on their roof. Due to the delicate nature of the concrete roofing tile, it is strongly advised that a roof with the experience and dedication to detail is hired for the installation. Someone who is used to working on high-end housing should understand the tricks of installing a concrete roof as well as the fact that there are no shortcuts to doing it right.

Attaching Concrete Tile To The Roof

While installing concrete roofing tile is slightly different than asphalt tile, the same basic principal is used. They can be attached using two methods, one of which uses lugs attached to wood strips nailed to the roof and connect to the back of the tile. In the other method the tiles are set on the roof surface and attached with nails or screws, much the same way asphalt tile is fastened.

The tiles are made to be interlocking to prevent water, snow and ice from getting under them in bad weather and once the first row of concrete roofing tile has been fastened to the roof, the second row can be interlocked to the first and also fastened to the roof.

Another advantage to concrete roofing tile and its installation technique is that it can be used on areas that are almost vertical and not restricted to rooftop use only. They can be attached to the front of a gable, a porch wall or anywhere else where they can serve as a decorative addition to the house’s protection.

The tremendous range of different types of roofing materials now available for both commercial and residential construction projects is astounding, and anyone contemplating any kind of construction will need to spend a considerable amount of time deciding which of the different types of roofing materials is best suited to his or her needs.

Some of the different types of roofing materials are the highly popular composition, or asphalt shingle; wooden shingles or shakes; corrugated fiberglass or metal; and for high-end construction projects, slate or tile. Most roofing materials retailers also offer installation services, which are essential in the case of tile or slate roofing.

The Many Different Types Of Roofing Material

In this day and age, there are many building and structures that are being constructed and made every minute. Many of these building are statements to the wealth and influence of a company or the hard work of a family. Materials for the buildings and structures often pas through scrutiny as the owners of the building or house under construction try to decide which of the different types of roofing material will be used.

Different Types Of Roofing Material

Composition shingles are one of those different types of roofing material that need no introduction. This is one of the most common roofing materials available in the United States today. They are also called asphalt shingles but are made of organic fiber mat or fiberglass core and integrated with asphalt and coated to add to the texture and color of the shingles. They are attached to the roof using an adhesive backing and staples or nails.

Other different types of roofing material are fiberglass or PVC sheets. These roofing sheets are often translucent or opaque and last for quite some time. They are usually corrugated to add to their strength and to aid in water disposal.

Wooden shingles and shakes can also be very attractive roofing materials. Shingles are usually cut to a pre-finished size and are smoothened to create a more natural wooden look. Shakes on the other hand are irregularly cut wood. They also appear attractive to some individuals. Wooden roofing materials need constant maintenance to avoid leaks and other water borne problems.

Other different types of roofing material are metal roofs. Standing seam steel roofs have now made a come back from a bygone decade when these were used in almost every structure under construction. This is a very durable roofing material and is literally maintenance free, non-flammable and it reflects heat, too.

Other different types of roofing material are tile and slate. These two are very long lasting and have been around for decades. Both are quite heavy and need a reinforced support system to be able to carry their weight. They are also rather difficult to put up and install and they can be expensive, too.

The above are just some of the different types of roofing material which are available worldwide. Most stores that sell these products can also install them. This is important because not all oft the different types of roofing material can be installed on your own.

Learning how to install metal roofing is not difficult, but beginners should only attempt to install metal roofing on buildings which have no more than moderately sloped roofs. While knowing how to install metal roofing correctly requires the use of an electric drill and a few other tools like a flat-bladed shovel and a chalk line, it is a relatively straightforward, if labor-intensive, procedure.

The first step in knowing how to install metal roofing involves knowing whether to choose the V-shaped roofing material with crimped edges, or the humped roofing material which is more difficult to install. In addition to the roofing material itself the job requires rolls of 30-pound roofing felt and metal roof edging.

Learning How To Install Metal Roofing Is Quick And Easy

For the homeowner who needs a new roof on their garage or shed and wants to put metal roofing on for its durability, they can do it themselves, and learning how to install metal roofing is not hard unless the roof is at too much of an angle to safely walk on. The roof itself should be able to support the weight of someone walking on it and the installer must have knowledge of using simple hand tools and an electric drill.

Metal roofing is available in two basic styles, one that has a series of V-shaped lines and the other has a hump, resembling the letter ‘R’ on one edge. The style with V-shaped lines is easier to install and the crimping gives it some extra strength so that it doesn’t wave around while being installed. If the installer has trouble figuring out how to install metal roofing, it is advised they contract a professional to make sure it’s done right.

Preparing Roof For New Metal

The first step in how to install metal roofing is to remove all of the old roofing materials with a roof shovel, basically a steel shovel with a flat blade, as well as any leftover nails. Thirty-pound roofing felt needs to be put down, rolled from one end to the other, parallel to the roofline. It needs to overlap a minimum of three inches, and is laid down with a two or three inch overhang on all sides.

Once the felt is in place, edge strips are put in place to help prevent water from backing up under the new shingles as well as providing an even edge to roof. Once this is done, use a chalk line to snap a line every two feet, from the crown to the edge. The roof is now ready if the person feels they know how to install metal roofing.

Cut the pieces of roofing to length, measuring top to bottom, allowing at least two inches for an overhang. Line the first piece to the left side of the roof and attach with roofing screws every two feet on the inside edge. On the other edge, screw the roof down away from the edging. Complete each step until complete. This is how to install metal roofing.

Using caulk or rubber strips, plug the edges where the trips overlap to keep bugs and birds out, and then add a piece of roof edging to cover all open holes at the end of the sheet. A metal cap will be used on the crown once the job is complete.

Deciding to use metal roofing materials on your home is smart because metal roofing materials can often be installed directly over an existing roof, eliminating the cost of tearing up and disposing of the old roofing materials. Metal roofing materials are also lightweight, making them easy to install and unlikely to put too much stress on an old roof structure.

Metal roofing materials range from the lightest and cheapest, aluminum, to the most expensive, copper and copper alloys. Steel metal roofing must be treated to stop it from corroding or rusting, and stainless steel roofing, which is corrosion and rust-resistant, is quite expensive.

Choosing The Right Metal Roofing Materials

Anyone who has chosen to install a metal roof on their home needs to understand the hundreds of choices of metal roofing materials that are available. Of course, these metal roofing materials require certain factors to be taken into consideration. Each of these metal roofing materials is better for different types of roofs, so you will need the help of an expert to know which is best for you.

A Quick Guide To Metal Roofing Materials

There are actually 5 different types of metal roofing materials for you to choose from. Of course, the final choice is up to your personal preferences.

The first of the metal roofing materials is steel. It is the heaviest and most sturdy material available. There are numerous finishes and treatments that can be applied to it so that it will not corrode or rust. These treatments and finishes can ensure longevity and aesthetic beauty. However, it is more expensive than regular steel.

The second of the metal roofing materials that you can choose from is aluminum. This material is extremely lightweight and resists corrosion and oxidation. However, it does not have any natural aesthetic appeal so you will have to treat it in order to make it look nice on your home.

Copper is the third of the metal roofing materials that you can choose from. It is quite expensive though because it is recognized as the most durable material. This is also the softest of the metal roofing materials so it will easily bend to suit your roof’s contours, which actually makes it very easy to install. Furthermore, it is not prone to rusting. However, it does have to be treated in order to be protected from the effects of the sun, which will actually turn its gorgeous red sheen green within a few years. This is why it is important to have a good treatment on it.

Conclusion

There are also alloys available but they are usually quite expensive since they are made out of a combination of metal roofing materials. In other words, the best properties from each of the metals that can be used are put together in their pure form to create this roofing.

Of course, there are numerous other factors that will affect your choice of metal roofing materials. However, most often it actually comes down to what you are actually able to afford. For this reason you should not rush your decision. If you are not able to afford the one that you really want then wait until you can. This really is a big investment.

Roofing equipment in the early 21st century is a far cry from what it was in the early 20th century, as the use of electricity has made power roofing equipment like pneumatic lifts and nail guns common sights at roofing job sites. Powered lifts can speed the completion of large roofing jobs by lifting asphalt shingle bundles to roof level instead of having them carried on the shoulders of a roofing crew.

Safety roofing equipment like goggles can reduce the risk of injury from cutting wood or rewiring a roof, and the rope and harness has been critical in preventing thousands of dangerous falls.

Roofing Equipment Makes Job Less Labor Intensive

Most professional installers have a host of roofing equipment designed to make their jobs easier and less labor intensive. Working on a roof is hard enough considering the weight of the materials that have to be taken to the top of a building and fact that roofing work is usually performed on hot, sunny days. In the early days of roofing, equipment was mainly a hammer, a tape measure and a pouch to hold nails.

A utility knife for cutting asphalt shingles is one of the small hand tools used with roofing equipment to make the job neater, but those installing tile, slate or metal roofing materials will need a different type of cutter to fit the pieces together properly. To make the job go faster, most roofers use nail guns. This piece of roofing equipment can either be powered by an air compressor, electric or battery. In addition to a hammer, this is an important part of the roofer’s toolbox.

One of the most important piece of roofing equipment is a ladder used to get onto the roof. There are electric powered lifts that attach to ladders to help hoist the shingles onto the roof, since the average pack of asphalt shingles weighs about 80-pounds, they can get heavy lugging them up the ladder on a shoulder. If the roofer does not have a lift, the ladder has to be strong enough to support the person with the added weight of the shingles. For large jobs a contractor may rent a lift for an hour or two until all the shingles have been raised to the roof.

Some Equipment Used Only Part Time

An air compressor to power pneumatic tools or a generator to supply power to electric tools may also be roofing equipment that professionals have on hand. When working on a new building with no electricity connected, the generator can supply power to the compressor. Some contractors also use compressors to power small refrigerators to help keep drinks cold on hot days.

Safety should also be part of the roofing equipment used by professionals and can include goggles to wear while cutting wood when reworking a roof line or repairing a roof. And, they are recommended when using any power roofing equipment to fasten shingles. One of the most important pieces of safety equipment is a rope and harness, typically used on a high roof or one with a steep pitch. In the event the roofer looses their footing, the harness can suspend them in the air instead of allowing them to hit the ground.

While the number of roofing materials currently available to homeowners is surprisingly large, the two most popular types of roofing materials remain those of asphalt and metal.

Asphalt roofing materials, both organic and inorganic, comprises about eighty percent of the roofing materials sold in the United States. Asphalt roofing materials are inexpensive, fairly lightweight, and easy to install, and will last between twenty and thirty years.

There are five metals commonly used in roofing materials, with steel being the most popular. Other metal roofing materials lightweight and inexpensive aluminum; rust- resistant stainless steel; very expensive but stunningly beautiful copper: and metal alloys of different strengths and prices.

What Types of Roofing Materials are Available?

There many different types of roofing materials available for consumers that may wish to roof their home. These materials can be categorized as metal, asphalt shingle, wood, and tile or slate. Each of these materials has advantages and disadvantages, and each actually offers various types of materials within each category. The most common roofing materials used are metal and asphalt.

Metal Roofing Materials

Although many types of metal roofs may resemble each other closely, there are actually five different materials that metal roofing may be made from. The most commonly used metal for metal roofing is steel. This is due to the fact that it is heavier and sturdier than other metals. Generally steel roofing will be coated with tin so that it avoids corrosion. There are also other coatings placed on to this type of metal roofing to keep it more durable and give it a nicer appearance.

Other types of metal roofing include stainless steel, aluminum, copper, and alloys. Stainless steel is very rarely used as it is a very expensive way to roof a home. They can give a very striking appearance to your roof and won’t rust or corrode, but it is one of the most expensive ways to roof a home.

Aluminum is a very commonly used metal roofing material for residential buildings. It does not rust, but it has to be painted so that it has a nice appearance. Aluminum roofs are also coated with most of the same materials used for steel roofs. Copper, while not very commonly used, is a good metal roofing material as it does not have to be refinished and so is not easily scratched. It is also very easy to use on a roof and it is aesthetically pleasing; the largest drawback to copper is its cost.

Another expensive type of metal material used for roofing is grouped into alloys. Alloys are combinations of different types of metals and materials that are combined to create great strength, appearance, and durability. While these may vary in cost, they are generally fairly expensive.

Asphalt Roofing Materials

Asphalt roofing materials can be created using either composition shingles or fiberglass shingles. Whichever materials used, it is then dipped into asphalt and the shingles are created from it. While this type of roofing material appears to be separate shingles, it is generally one large section of shingles that is designed to look like individual pieces. This type of roofing is found on most residential homes across the United States. This is because it has a nice appearance at a low cost.
